Service designer + researcher
School of Design, Northumbria University
London + Newcastle, UK
I’m a designer and researcher, and first got involved with service design in 2006, as the lead designer on a project commissioned by Designs of the Times 2007 (http://www.dott07.com/go/dash). I’m currently in the later stages of a practice-based PhD on service design at Northumbria University. The research uses critical, self-directed design projects, alongside literary and ethnographic strategies, to rethink some basic assumptions about service design – which have proliferated so quickly and widely that they constitute an emerging orthodoxy. (For example, the idea that when we talk about services and ‘communities’, it is obvious what kind of communities we want to see in the world.) Outside the academy, I continue work with a number of organisations on service design projects – most recently Marie Stopes International, Uscreates, and Sense Worldwide.
